The shaman lives in two simultaneous realities: the inner dream space in which spiritual encounters transform perception of the external world, and the external world which becomes the stage on which the shaman acts out his divine purpose as healer. Each time the shaman enters trance for the good of patients and community and confonts the agents of affliction, there is psychological integration for the shaman. The shaman brings together heaven and earth, spirit and humankind. Shamanism appears in every culture. Amongst Tibetan people, it predates (and is woven into) Buddhist philosophy and practice, and is a vital and living wisdom tradition practiced from ancient times into present day. "He is a being who goes into trance and at that time voices speak through his body which allow him to diagnose illnesses and sometimes to cure them, to give advice concerning the future and to clarify present facts in the light of the evidence which took place in the past. He is,therefore, at the same time a priviledged intermediary between spirits(which give and cure sicknesses) and men; between the past, present and the future; between life and death and, in another perspective, between the individual and a certain social mythology. He can, it seems, be of any jat(caste) and he can take as pupil, in order to trans-mit to him his knowledge and his techniques, a person of any other jatâ€. Tibet is an enormous open space where only the wind breaks the absolute silence. Isolated villages break up the dusty winding road that travels across the highest plateau of the world. Pilgrims from around the world travel to Lhasa in order to visit the many holy sites and pray with the monks in the many monasteries. As a traveler moves across the rooftop of the world they will add their offerings to the thousands of flags and stones that have been placed there by other pilgrims. The great Tibetan yogi, Milarepa said about this sacred land: Up there, among the sunny stones, you can find an odd market: you can exchange the vortex of your life with a limitless bliss. |
